Smith's tennis career began as a member of the tennis team at Virginia Intermont College. His interest sparked, he began working for Bob Helton, longtime pro and owner of the Bristol Racquet & Fitness Club.

This friendship eventually led to Smith's purchase of the facility, which has a complete pro shop. The acquisition allowed Smith to incorporate his bachelor of arts in business management with his love for the sport, thus launching many exciting new business opportunities.

Smith is a member of the Mountain Empire Tennis Association and is actively involved with USTA team tennis. He also works with the association to ensure the growth of tennis throughout the community.
